Assessment Of Effect Of Different Factors On Clinical Outcome Of Periapical Surgery
Journal Title: IDA Ludhiana's Journal - Le Dentistry - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
Background: The success rate of periapical surgery has been reported to range from 44% to 95%. Studies conducted by various authors have evaluated the result of different variables on the periapical surgery outcome. Some studies have reported that age, sex, tooth type, preoperative signs and symptoms are non-significant as regard to success of periradicular surgery. The current study was planned to assess the effect of various factors on clinical outcome of periradicular surgery. Materials and method: The present study was conducted by combined effort of the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics and the Department of Oral Surgery of the dental institute. For the study, we selected 50 patients in need for and scheduled for endodontic surgery. The surgical procedure was performed under local anesthesia. Follow up was done at 6 to 12 months postoperatively and assessment of treatment success was done clinically and radiographically. The cases with presence of pain, tenderness to percussion, tenderness to palpation of buccal mucosa, swelling of buccal mucosa were termed as clinical failures. Results: A total of 50 patients participated in the study.19 patients were males and 31 patients were females. The age ranged from 22-71 years with maximum patients in the age group of 41-50 years. The habit of smoking was present in 14 patients while 36 patients were non-smokers. The significant difference of variables on success rate was found in the sex of the patients and in the age group of 41-50 years (p<0.05). The habit of smoking had non-significant effect on success rate. Significant difference was observed in preoperative clinical symptoms of tender to percussion, presence of fistula and resurgery cases. Conclusion: From the results of current study, we conclude that the habit of smoking is not strongly associated with the success rate of periradicular surgery whereas sex of patient, preoperatively pain, tenderness on percussion, presence of fistula, resurgery cases are strongly associated with the success of periradicular surgery.
