ASSESSMENT OF MENUS FOR ADOLESCENTS IN SPORTS SCHOOL
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 3
Abstract
Background. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of season on energy, macronutrient, vitamin and mineral content in menus for adolescents in sports school.Material and methods. Seventy menus offered to adolescents who attended boarding sports school were analysed. The menus, provided by school dieticians, were from the second year, from September 2006 to June 2007. The content of energy, macronutrients, vitamins and minerals was calculated by means of the Dieta 2.0 computer programme. The influence of season on energy and nutrient content was analysed using SPSS 12.0 for Windows computer programme.Results. Statistical analysis showed no statistically significant influence on energy and nutrient content. The menus were characterised by excessive content of total energy, total protein, animal protein, total fat, saturated fatty acids, disacchardies, dietary fibre, all vitamins, except for vitamin D, as well as excessive content of minerals, especially sodium, along with deficient content of plant protein, starch and monounsaturated fatty acids.Conclusions. Nutritional inadequacies observed in the analysed menus can be easily eliminated by adjusting energy content to the adolescents' requirements, introducing either olive oil or rapeseed oil, reducing animal fat and sugar, eliminating rich sources of cholestelor and increasing content of plant protein and starch. Detailed research into energy and nutrient intake of adolescents in sports school should be carried out.
