Assessment of seroprevalence of viral transfusion transmitted infections among blood donors at a government hospital blood bank with facility of only whole blood
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: Every blood transfusion carries potential risk of transmitting transfusion transmitted diseases (TTD) to the recipient. Strict criteria are followed while selecting a donor so that proper blood free of all pathogens is available for recipient. Objectives: To study seroprevalence of viral transfusion transmitted major infections (HIV, HBC and HCV) among blood donors at a government hospital blood bank. Methodology: Present study was conducted over a period of three years (January 2014 to December 2016). Total number of donors screened during this period was 25613. Samples were tested for HIV, HBV and HCV, and retested if found positive by third generation ELISA tests. Comparative analysis was done Results: Of total 25613 donors male donors predominated, 25077 (97.9%) male and female 536 (2.1%). Average seropositivity of HIV, HBsAg and anti-HCV was 0.066%, 0.359% and 0.066% among all donors. Conclusion: Comparing a retrospective data over three years showed seroprevalence of HBsAg followed by HIV and anti-HCV respectively. Study results reflect prevalence of these infections in the healthy population and warrant measures that should be taken to detect these infections.
