ASSESSMENT OF THE AWARENESS LEVELS AMONG MOTHERS REGARDING INFANT FEEDING PRACTICES IN THE RURAL FIELD PRACTICE AREA OF SIDDHARTHA MEDICAL COLLEGE, VIJAYAWADA

Abstract
Context: In India about 1.9 million children die every year before they see their first birthday. During the weaning period, one out of four surviving children receives neither the quality nor the quantity of food needed to replace the substances provided by mother’s milk. It is now known that many of these infant deaths are attributed to inappropriate feeding practices like delayed initiation of breast feeding, delayed weaning Aims: To Know the level of awareness among postnatal mothers regarding infant feeding practices Settings and Design: A cross sectional study was done on 100 postnatal mothers with infants attending the primary health centre present in the rural field practice area of Siddhartha medical college , Vijayawada Methods and Material:Pre tested semi structured questionnaire used. The field practice area of SMC, PHC peddaoutpalli comprises of five sub centers of which three sub centers were randomly selected for the study.The total population of these subcenters is approximately 20,000. Based on the birth rate of 21 per 1000 population, 210 births were expected over 6 months period. In the first 6months of the year 215 births took place in these subcenters .Every alternate house is visited in this 2 subcentres and mothers of infants who were available during the visit and have given their consent were interviewed. Finally a total of 100 mothers were interviewed Statistical analysis used: Statistical analysis was done using MS excel ver.2010 and SPSS Software ver.16 Results: 36% of the participants have no idea of exclusive breast feeding. 26% don’t know about colostrum. 50% believe it is safe to give prelacteal feeds. Only 20% were aware of correct position of holding baby while breast feeding. 60% said that weaning should be started after completion of 6months Conclusions: Knowledge regarding certain aspects of Infant feeding practices was found to be inadequate
