ASSESSMENT OF THE DANUBE RIVER INFLUENCE ON SOME HYDROLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NORTHWESTERN BLACK SEA IN 2004-2013.

Abstract

Purpose. Many big rivers whose combined discharge totals to 265-267 km3 are flowing into the shallow northwestern part of the Black Sea (NWBS), which can not but tell upon the circulation of marine water masses in the area. The objective of the work has been to reveal the role of discharge of the second big European river the Danube in forming of the regime of levels, velocities and directions of flows of water masses in the NWBS in 2004-2013. Data & Methods. For this purposes the sets of average monthly values of the Danube discharge and of water level on three marine stations in the NWBS for 2004-2013 have been analyzed. Calculation of average monthly velocities, directions and sizes of water flows have been performed for two transects: village Primorskoye – Island Zmiinyi – village Chernomorskoye by using of geostrophic balance equations. Results. The results received have enabled us to estimate some regularities and character of influence of the Danube River discharge on some characteristics of water exchange between the NWBS and the open part of the Black Sea in 2004-2013. In particular, the level of the Danube River influence on the water masses transportation in the NWBS has been assessed on different distances from the river mouth. The conclusion about the presence of almost permanent anticyclonic meander between the Rim Current and the NWBS coast has been grounded.
