Abstract

One of the most common problems of the human being nowadays is the dental-jaw deformities. This can affect all aspects of individual’s life from childhood up to adulthood. The objective of the present study was to determine the need and demand for orthodontic treatment in 15- to 17-year-old students in Kermanshah, in 2012.In this cross-sectional study, 600 students of Kermanshah city (300 males and 300 females) from public and nonprofit schools were selected and included in the study using random cluster sampling method. The need for orthodontic treatments was assessed based on the Index Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and the demand for treatment was analyzed through a questionnaire. Totally, 27.9% of the students were in great or intense need of orthodontic treatments, 16.8% were in moderate need, and 71.4% of the students did not require any treatment. The commonest detected malocclusion was tooth displacement and occlusion was more prevalent among girls than among boys (P= 0.003). Students with overbite seemed to have the highest demand ratio. Final conclusion showed that the need for orthodontic treatment is affected by gender and the demand for treatment is influenced by socioeconomic status of the individual.
