Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 49

Abstract

The purpose of this research is determined to assess and evaluate the problems which children with mild intellectual disability encounter during the first and second level mainstreaming education process, from the social work perspective. To identify the problems encountered by children in mainstreaming education and assess families’ socio-demographic and economic characteristics, data is collected via a questionnaire consisting of 39 questions prepared by the researcher. Data is collected via conversations and questionnaires of the families of 96 children with mild intellectual disability attending to 11 separate Special Education and Rehabilitation Center managed by social workers at least 10 years’ experience in Ankara. Only 60.4% of the children who continue to be part of the mainstreaming education had an Individualized Education Program (IEP) prepared by guidance teacher, school teacher and/or special education teacher and half of the families could participate in the process. Half of the children who attend the mainstreaming education faced problems like exclusion by teachers and the school administration, lack of attention and acceptance and difficulty in communicating with other children in the class.
