Assessment of the range of mandibular movements as related to gender in Polish young adult non-patients
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2016, Vol 69, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction. The range of mandibular movement is one of the most important clinical variables used in diagnosing the function of the stomatognathic system. Aim of the study. To evaluate the range of mandibular movements by gender in the group of TMD-symptom- free Polish young adults. Materials and methods. The study material consisted of a group of 260 volunteers who had completed the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/ TMD) questionnaire in its internationally accepted Polish version. The volunteers were students from three randomly selected schools in Cracow, Poland. Following clinical examination, each participant received none, one or more of the RDC/TMD axis I diagnoses. Those participants who did not receive any RDC/TMD axis I diagnoses were included in the study. On the basis of a clinical RDC/TMD examination, the following measurements of the range of mandibular movement were obtained: the actual dimension of mandibular movement during pain-free opening (ADMPFO), the actual dimension of maximum unassisted opening (ADMUO), the actual dimension of maximum assisted opening (ADMAO), the actual right (ARLM) and left (ALLM) lateral movements, and the actual protrusive movement (APM). The results were statistically analyzed by the gender of the respondents. Results. One hundred and ninety individuals were included in the analysis, of which 131 (69%) were female and 59 (31%) were male, ranging from 16.7 to 19.3 years of age, with a mean age of 17.9 years. The statistical analysis of gender differences in the range of movements of the mandible showed that there were significant differences in ADMPFO (p=0.002; Mann– Whitney U-test), in ADMUO (p=0.008; t-test) and in ADMAO (p=0.010; t-test). There were no statistically significant differences between males and females in terms of the lateral movements as quantified by ARLM (p=0.759; Mann–Whitney U-test), ALLM (p=0.870; t-test), or APM (p=0.570; Mann–Whitney U-test). Conclusion. Gender should be taken into consideration when measuring mandibular movements.
