Asymmetric sacrotuberous and sacrospinous ligament
Journal Title: International Journal of Anatomical Variations - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 4
Abstract
Aim: To describe a case of medial asymmetry in the sacrotuberous/sacrospinous ligament complex (SSTL). Methods: Description of the anatomical findings in a cadaver with an asymmetrical SSTL and comparison to five anatomically normal cadaveric dissections. Results: Marked asymmetry with an atypical proximal origin and cord-like SSTL is described and contrasted to the more typical fan-shaped ligament complex. No vascular perforators traversed the SSTL in the atypical case and the vessels were relatively protected during SSTL release. Conclusion: Significance variance and asymmetry within the SSTL can occur. Surgeons should be aware of this phenomenon and consider anatomical variations when performing a peri-sacral dissection.

Dual palmaris longus variation in which muscles originated from antebrachial fascia
Introduction: Palmaris longus originates from medial epicondyle and attaches to palmar aponeurosis. This muscle is largely used for tendon transfers by surgeons so understanding of its variations is necessary anatomists...
Dissection of spinalis capitis and implications for osteopathic treatment
The spinalis cervicis and capitis muscles are small components of the erector spinae group. These muscles are highly variable, and when present, they are typically asymmetric and often fused with other muscles. Herein, w...
First report of a “latissimo-cleidocostal” muscle on the anterolateral thoracic wall
During routine cadaveric dissection of the thorax and upper limb in a clinical gross anatomy course, we identified an unusual, supernumerary muscle in the right torso of a 91 year-old, Caucasian male. This consisted of a...
Massive right-sided hiatal hernia variation
During routine cadaver dissection for academic purposes, a massive hiatal hernia was identified in an 84- year-old female cadaver. A herniation of abdominal contents was displaced into the right thoracic cavity, which co...
Circumaortic left renal vein ipsilateral to an adrenal incidentaloma: A case report
During a routine dissection of a cadaver, a circumaortic left renal vein was found ipsilateral to an enlarged adrenal gland. There were two branches draining into the inferior vena-cava, the superior branch entered at th...
