Asymptomatic Bacteriuria in Pregnant Women from Rural Area of Latur District of Maharashtra, India

Journal Title: Journal of Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences University - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 3

Abstract

Background: Bacteriuria is a significant cause of morbidity in pregnant women affecting both mother and fetus. Institution of rational antibiotic treatment on the basis of screening helps to reduce further morbidity. Aim and Objectives: To find out the prevalence of urinary tract infections in asymptomatic pregnant women and to study the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of the isolated bacteria to guide the treatment. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 mid-stream urine samples from Asymptomatic Antenatal Care (ANC) cases were screened for significant bacteriuria by using standard procedures. The bacterial isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility studies. Results: Significant bacteriuria was found positive in 23% cases. It was more common in the age group 18 to 25 years (91.30%), and during 2nd trimester (47.82%). S. aureus (82.60%) was found to be themost common uropathogen. Imipenem and meropenem (82.60% each) were found to be most effective antimicrobial agents. Conclusion: The results indicate that there is a notable increase in the prevalence of uropathogens resistant to multiple antimicrobial agents in rural areas also. The results also emphasize the importance of screening for significant bacteriuria in asymptomatic pregnant women.
