AT BREAKPOINT OF VALUES: THE PHENOMENON OF DISGUISING

Abstract
The viewpoint – according to which theatrical disguising of males in female clothes aims primarily at comical purposes and the rest of its aspects either to be considered on the background of the subject or not to be taken in consideration at all – is well developed in Ukrainian and oversees bibliography (e.g.it is shared by Gilles Deleuze). It is clear that such an approach has been present with the issue itself, since the phenomenon of disguising has primarily been discussed in context of the art criticism. However, I believe it is necessary to make the research area a bit wider, including in its subject field some other aspects of the problem. It is necessary because the research of the phenomenon of disguising from the point of reaching the comic effect may answer to question «how» it can be reached, but considerring the possibility of this aspect of the issue we will be unable to answer question «why» it does appear. In other words, something stimulates males to disguise as females. I may state an assumption that in such a manner males do not try to make fun of females and their clothes – there is nothing comical at all – but to find in social behaviour of females that which is being rather not provocative but contradicting rational masculine vision of the female status in society. Therefore, I thin possible to specify in the study of the phenomenon of male disguising in female clothes a few social aspects, including the socio-political one. I suppose that the expression means of the phenomenon is the art. The art is not only capable of the most adequate expression of implicit or concealed tendencies of the phenomenon development but, to a certain extent, the art overtakes the real development of situation. Concerning the disguising of males in female clothes, the overtaking consists in expressing of care or anxiety they feel about the gradual lost of which seemed iviolable: social status of the head of the family, unquestioned authority, etc. Females themselves, simultaneously, having undertaken the first steps to change their status, are not sure they have been acting aright. From this comes indecision, partial decisions, which become the object of ironical (or sarcastic) attitude of the males. Therefore, I believe it is necessary to draw attention to this phenomenon as a breakpoint of traditional values, models of social roles, statuses and social behaviour of males and females. In this process, the disguise plays a role of social indicator, since the comical becomes the last shelter of the outdated values.
