Attiude of Medical Science Students towards Medical Ethics

Abstract
ABSTRACT Introduction: Medical ethics is an analytical activity whereby various aspects of decisions on moral issues in the practice of medicine are investigated. Aim: The present study aimed to delve into students’ attitudes towards medical ethics at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-correlational study, the statistical population consisted of 380 medical, nursing and midwifery students at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences in the second semester of the academic year 2014-2015. A sample of 380 subjects (200 females and 180 males) was selected through quota sampling. For data collection, a demographic information questionnaire and an attitude measuring scale developed by Motamed-Jahromi M and Dehghani SL in the year 2014, were used. Data were analysed through the descriptive (frequency distribution, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (independent t-test and One-way ANOVA). Further, the SPSS Statistics 21.0 was used for data analysis. Results: The results of the present study demonstrated that the students’ overall attitude towards medical ethics was positive (4.47±0.35). The highest and lowest means of attitude towards medical ethics was related to the principles of beneficence (4.62±0.67) and justice (4.29±0.80), respectively. Also, the results of t-test revealed that there was a significant relationship between the attitudes towards medical ethics in terms of gender, age, and marital status (p<0.05). Besides, the results of analysis of variance showed that the students’ field of study and their attitudes towards medical ethics were significantly related (p<0.05). Conclusion: To address paramount issues, including the ethical considerations within the scope of medicine, is one of the basic necessities among university students that should be taken into consideration in the comprehensive system of health. So, it is suggested that the medical, nursing and midwifery students be educated in medical ethics by means of short-term training programs or workshops.
