Journal Title: Denizcilik Fakültesi Dergisi - Year 2015, Vol 7, Issue 2
Abstract
Marina market sustains a steady growth rate and marina investments keep increasing. Consequently, it becomes more important for marinas to determine an effective market mix. This study considers marinas as destinations and aims to discover the pull factors of marinas and push factors that motivate their yachter customers. The study also aims to discover whether these factors are likely to change based on the profile specifications of the yachters. The conceptual framework of the study depends on the push motivation factors for tourists and pulls motivation factors of destinations from tourism literature. A survey research was applied to 261 yachters at İzmir and Aydın marinas between August-September 2014. Data was collected mostly face to face by using nonrandom judgmental sampling method, and analyzed by exploratory factor analysis. According to the results, the most attractive marina characteristics are security, service and infrastructure quality. Feeling free, doing anything oneself wants and spending time together with family and friends are the most important push factors. Marina attractiveness factors are gathered under service, prestige, accessibilities, touristic attractiveness, local culture, entertainment, and supportive elements dimensions where push factors are gathered under social, adventure, and freedom dimensions. The importance levels attained to these factors have significant differences depending on the age groups, gender, marital status, ownership status and destination preferences of yachters. Results lead to several suggestions for both marina managers and scholars working in the field.
