Automatization of Quantitative Structural Analysis of Composites

Abstract

The work suggests the method of automatized quantitative analysis of composite structure that boasts of the shorter investigation hours and the higher accuracy as compared with quantitative metallographic method. The method involved the processing of digital microphotographs of the structure using the special computer program and the following construction of two- and three-dimensional models of the interfacial zones at the boundaries of the composites. The interfacial zones structure was analyzed by means of the decomposition of the probability density distribution curve for the coefficients of light reflection from the polished section surface into the separate gauss curves and the calculation of the gauss curves parameters. The summary curve was decomposed by step-by-step elimination of the gauss curves from the overall distribution. The eliminated areas after taking the logarithm could be described by quadratic function. Therefore, on approximation of these areas by quadratic function, the parameters were found and the separate gauss curves were plotted. The ratio of the separate gauss curves square to their total square was equal to a relative content of the corresponding phase in the composites structure. The width of the interfacial zones was determined by the most oscillated area in a plot of light reflection coefficients as a function of section coordinate related to cartesian coordinates.
