Autopoietic systems theory. A brief introduction to a radical theory of society

Abstract

Luhmann's theoretical proposal has generated both supporters and critics of his theory, where autopoiesis is one of the most controversial concepts in his theory, but which is central to his proposal. Luhmann’s incorporation of this concept to the study of society generated a critique by Maturana on the autonomy of man in a society that it operate autopoietic way. Criticism and countercriticism to be addressed in this essay.
