AWARENESS OF URINARY INCONTINENCE AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH HEALTH - SEEKING BEHAVIOR IN ELDERLY INDIVIDUALS LIVING IN NURSING HOMES

Journal Title: Kocatepe Medical Journal - Year 2024, Vol 25, Issue 2

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between urinary incontinence awareness and health-seeking behavior in elderly individuals living in nursing homes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample of the study, which was carried out in descriptive design type, consisted of individuals aged 65 and over living in a nursing home in Istanbul between October 2022 and January 2023 (N=120). Data were collected with the “Elderly Individual Infırmation Form” “Incontinence Awareness Scale”, and “Health Seeking Behavior Scale”. RESULTS: The majority of the elderly individuals (70%) were male, their mean age was 65.71±8.49 years, 70% had urinary incontinence, 57.5% had urinary incontinence while coughing or sneezing, 52.5% had urinary incontinence during their daily activities, 62.5% of them used pads/cloths related to urinary incontinence, mean duration of urinary incontinence was 42.75±53.53 months. There was a statistically significant relationship between the Incontinence Awareness Scale mean score and the Health Seeking Behavior mean score (p<0.05). In addition, female gender, presence-frequency of urinary incontinence and use of pads/cloths were found to be effective variables on urinary incontinence awareness and health-seeking behavior. CONCLUSIONS: The awareness of urinary incontinence of the elderly individuals was moderate, and their health-seeking behaviors were moderate-high. Determining the urinary incontinence status and awareness of elderly individuals living in nursing homes will enable the implementation of approaches for individuals to cope with urinary incontinence.
