Bank consolidation/capitalization in the Nigerian Commercial Bank(1986-2006):Causes,consequences and implication for the future

Abstract

The CBN Governor noted that the vision or prospect of the CBN and the Federal Government of Nigeria is a banking system that is part of the global change, and which is strong and reliable. It is a banking system which must be efficient, depositors can trust and investors can rely upon. Using descriptive approach, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of the causes, consequences and implication of the policy thrust of the recent bank capitalization/consolidation of the Nigerian Commercial banks. The implications of this paper amongst others, is that reforms, remain a major tool for banking soundness, especially in the light of the recent global financial meltdown
