BASIC PECULIARITIES OF JEWISH ENGLISH SPEAKING RELIGIOUS DISCOURSE

Abstract

The represented article is dealt with the study of the basic lingual cultural peculiarities of Jewish English speaking religious discourse, basic religious functions. Religious discourse is considered to be the institutional communication, and discourse is understood differently within modern linguistics. The following functions of religion are mentioned: world outlook, communicative, regulative, translating, informative, normative and others. The topicality of the article is determined by linguists’ interest in the complicated character of the relations between language, culture, realization of certain ethno specific ideas in Jewish English speaking religious discourse. Judaism is often characterized by the following aspects: monotheism; the belief in the berith (between God and Jewish people); ethnic and territorial identity; specific laws. In the research it is underlined that some biblical ideas inuence upon the human culture in general. Thus, in this paper the nominal and sentence metaphors which realize the address to the God, the main notions and symbols of Judaism: the notion of redemption and choseness of Jewish people, tefillin, blessing the food, immanentism of God, prayer Shema and mitzvot. Thorough attention is given to suggestive character of the texts. As religious discourse is based on the suggestion which is the verbal inuence on the human psyche which is perceived without criticism. The features of the analyzed material are distinguished: evaluative character; elevated style; repetitions; and epithets. Thus, the article investigates the understanding of discourse, basic religious functions, the language means of realization of Jewish religious discourse, main symbols of Judaism.
