BASKETBALL TEAMS’ PROPER NAMES: STRUCTURE, DERIVATION, MOTIVATIONAL AND FUNCTIONAL FEATURES

Abstract
The subject of this research is proper names of Ukrainian basketball teams. The lack of such studies in native philology caused actuality of the subject of this article. Nominations of male basketball teams are directly analyzed, which competed in Ukrainian championships: Super League, Higher League, first second and youth leagues during 1991–2015. Totally were recorded 245 titles that have 323 versions. All basketballkomandonyms are analyzed by three main indicators: semantics of forming bases, method of derivation and motivation. It was found that the most popular are complex structures, which derived from erhonyms, such as names of sponsoring companies and educational institutions, where sport teams were established. These nominations mainly arose by the way of semantization way and compounding. Among vidtoponymnyh derivatives denominations are the dominators, which are motivated by proper names of settlements with locative meaning, and there was shown the increase of their productivity, which can be considered as the universal tendency. Insignificant is the number of vidapeliatyvnyh formations, symbolic nominations and proper names, which were formed by morphological way. Perspectives of further studies are seen in expansion as time limits (approximately before the beginning of XX century, when the basketball in Ukraine were established), so characteristic limits (names of amateur and professional women’s teams will be involved to the analysis).
