Abstract

Beata Pawłowska-Wilde passed away on Easter Saturday 2015. She graduated from the Department of Conservation and Historic Monuments Studies specialising in museology at the Copernicus University in Toruń. She was Head of the Museology Department of the Centre for Documentation of Monuments (ODZ) for many years, as well as the co-author of publications on museums, including „Muzealnictwo”, „Museum Events”, the „Bibliography of information contained in publications by museums in Poland” and others. She was born on 13th April 1932 into a family of scientists researching history and art history. Both her private and professional life were greatly influenced by her family home and her surroundings, imbued with a scientific approach towards all and any activities, humanities, patriotism and honour.Her childhood was marked by the war. At the beginning of the Warsaw Rising, at the age of 12, she and her younger brother Christopher were deported to forced labour in Germany. Her moving accounts from those tragic days may be found in the Oral History Archives of the Museum of the Warsaw Rising.She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Copernicus University in Toruń in 1954. She was engaged by Prof. Kazimierz Malinowski to work at ODZ in 1963. Her first task was to assemble and classify a bibliography of museology from Polish and foreign writings, as well as to edit subsequent volumes of the „Library of Museology and Monument Protection” Series. In 1976 she became Head of the Museology Department. While in that position she directed her own projects related to the history of museology; for example, she devised a comprehensive survey for the Index of Museum Registry in Poland and subsequent editions of the Inventory of Museums in Poland. From 1982 she worked as Managing Editor of „Muzealnictwo”, from 2000-2010 as Associate Editor, and from 1991 as editor-in-chief of the periodical „Museum Events”. She also co-authored successive volumes of the „Bibliography of information contained in publications issued by the museums in Poland. Non-serial and serial publications”. During 40 years in the Museology Department of the Centre for Documentation of Monuments, Beata Pawłowska-Wilde made an invaluable contribution to the systematisation of activities relating to Polish museums, recording them and promoting knowledge about Polish and international museology. She established a relationship with Polish museum professionals which resulted in close contacts between „Muzealnictwo’s” Editorial Board with this circle to this day. She co-operated conceptually with the Editorial Board, offering her advice and support when preparing each issue of the periodical. The editorial archives include: a film about „Muzealnictwo” made in 2012 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the annual, and footage shot by her son, Tomasz Wilde, which consists of priceless memories of Beata Pawłowska-Wilde, as well as of the long-time editor-in-chief of the „Muzealnictwo” Annual, Janusz Odrowąż-Pieniążek, in which both of them tell interesting and touching stories about the editors’ history, their associates and the fate of the periodical in the 1980s and 1990s.
