BENFOTIAMINE AND HEART RATE VARIABILITY IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS AND CARDIAC AUTONOMIC NEUROPATHY

Journal Title: World Journal of Pharmaceutical Research - Year 2019, Vol 8, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: The significance of cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) has not been fully appreciated and there is no unified treatment algorithm. Aim: To investigate the effects of benfotiamine (BFT) on the heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and CAN. Patients and Methods: 32 patients with T2DM and definite stage of CAN were allocated to two treatment groups: control (n = 15) received standard antihyperglycaemic therapy; group 2 (n = 17) - in addition BFT 300 mg/d for three months. The heart rate variability (HRV) parameters were analyzed. Results: It was found out that BFT contributed to increase of the sum of the squares of differences between adjacent normal-to-normal intervals, highfrequency component of HRV during the active and passive periods of the day. Conclusions: The positive influences of BFT suggests the feasibility of its administration to patients with T2DM and definite stage of CAN.
