Abstract

In this descriptive study, it is aimed to determine of the knowledge level and approaches of nurses about the symptoms and risks of child abuse and neglect. The results obtained from the research can be used as a scientific data source, in the establishment of educational programs by determining the educational needs of nurses about child abuse and neglect. The research was carried out with nurses (n = 436) who work in a hospital affiliated with the Ministry of Health and who accepted the study. The general knowledge scores of nurses regarding child neglect and abuse are moderate. As the education level of nurses increases, it has been observed that the level of knowledge about child neglect and abuse increased. The average of general knowledge points was found to be high for nurses who serve in a child-related unit, who encounter a case of child negligence and abuse, who stated that they would report in a suspicious situation. In the light of these findings, it is recommended that nurses should be given sufficient and detailed information in the undergraduate education program to diagnose the symptoms and risks of child neglect and abuse, employees especially in serving children department to take part of child neglect and abuse issues in the in-service training and should be continued training on a regular basis.
