[b][i]Women’s Rights versus Legal Protection of the Human Embryo: Some International Legal Aspects[/i][/b]

Abstract
The universal (UN) and European (Council of Europe) standards concerning the initial point of the protection of the human life are presented. The author tries to determine whether those standards are applicable to a human embryo. The article contains, among other things, a comprehensive and de-tailed examination of the women’s reproductive rights issues. The author analyses the UN human rights treaties, such as the ICCPR, ICESCR, CEDAW and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, as well as the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine. The research is supplemented by a comparative analysis of the appropriate practice of the European Court of Human Rights and the UN treaty bodies.The final conclusion of the article states that the lack of legal protection of human embryo complies with international legal standards. However, the national laws that give priority to the protection of the human embryo over women’s rights are not in line with those standards.
