Abstract

Analysed statements by Benedict XVI about closeness between God and human underline the fact that it is an expression of His love and mercy to people. I believe that God’s closeness might be seen as a typical feature of this pope’s christology; God became incarnated to be close to the human and to make the human close to God. The infinite and transcendent God, the Creator of heaven and earth is not distant, but rather close. He has been revealed like this in the Old and New Testament; this is the God that the Church should preach. God the Creator became close to us by incarnating the Son of God, adopting human nature, death on the cross and resurrection, by His presence in the Church in the Holy Spirit and by the established sacraments of the Church, especially the Eucharist. All members of the Church, in particular bishops and priests, but also all members of the congregation should live in this proximity of God and bear witness of it to their fellow men. We are all destined to be close, especially to the sick, the poor and the needy - this is nothing short of practising love and mercy. Therefore, this closeness is a certain sign of love and mercy.
