Bollard miniplate system in the treatment of growing patients with skeletal class III malocclusions Case report
Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2017, Vol 13, Issue 4
Abstract
Skeletal class III is caused by simultaneous excessive anterior mandibular growth, insufficient maxillary growth in the anteroposterior dimension or both these defects existing at the same time. Treatment of skeletal class III malocclusions depends on the patient’s age, cause of a defect and its intensity. The use of temporary intraoral skeletal anchorage such as the Bollard miniplate system is one of possibilities to treat patients at the developmental age with skeletal class III malocclusions. Aim. The paper aimed to present skeletal and dentoalveolar changes observed during treatment of a skeletal class III malocclusion with the Bollard miniplate system in a 13-year-old male patient. Material and methods. The patient at the age of 13 years presented for orthodontic treatment. Based on extraoral, intraoral examinations and additional tests (X-ray images: orthopantomogram and lateral cephalogram) a skeletal class III malocclusion was diagnosed (ANB = -2°, Wits = -8.1 mm). Two-stage orthodontic treatment was scheduled. The first stage – Haas appliance in the upper arch with partial fixed appliance on the upper incisors and the Bollard miniplate system in the mandible; the second stage – treatment with upper and lower thin archwire. Results. Patient’s facial profile improvement and significant improvement of skeletal relationships were observed. After treatment the ANB was -0.6°, and Wits was -2.7 mm. Conclusions. Temporary intraoral skeletal anchorage such as the Bollard miniplate system is an effective tool used in the treatment of skeletal class III malocclusions in patients at the developmental age. (Mizerska-Żurowska A, Mituś- Kenig M, Derwich M, Mika A, Łoboda M.
