Bone Metabolism and Osteoporosis in Oncological Practice

Journal Title: Біль. Суглоби. Хребет - Year 2015, Vol 3, Issue 19

Abstract

A review of the current literature and our own researches data are presented. They are demonstrated the existence of close connection between malignant tumors and bone metabolism disorders. It manifests by an increase in the synthesis of osteopontin and osteocalcin, the activation of alkaline phosphatase, imbalance of osteoassociated macro- (calcium, magnesium, phosphorus) and microelements (cobalt, manganese, copper, strontium, chromium, zinc, etc), which involved in the pathogenetic constructions of cancer and osteoporosis. The latter can be complicated with bone fractures in these patients. Changes in bone metabolism are aggravated by ongoing chemo- and radiation therapy of cancer, and existing information about oncoinduced action of bisphosphonates, which are widely used in the treatment of osteoporosis, is now called into question. These data necessitate the development of anticancer therapy medical technology, which has protective effect toward bone metabolism, as well as the creation of antiosteoporotic treatment, simultaneously directed to the tumor process.
