BOTANIC GARDENS AS SCIENTIFICALLY ELABORATED MUSEUM COLLECTIONS

Abstract

This article aims at highlighting similarities and differences in history and operation of the present botanic gardens and museums. Activities of the aforementioned types of institutions are sometimes linked; therefore, joint actions could be beneficial for both institutions and visitors. There are opportunities in terms of joint projects in the field of science, education, promotion and delivering entertainment to visitors. This article aims at presenting the history and common directions of development of botanic gardens and museums to museum employees. Composed from the point of view of a museum employee, this article is an attempt to underline potential opportunities of cooperation. Moreover, the history of creating and development of botanic garden is presented: medieval utilitarian collections of medicinal plants in doctors’ houses and similar didactic municipal collections from the 16th century, used in education of medicine students; common roots in Wunderkamer, which more scientific version was to constitute a type of mnemonic theater – 3D-equivalent of the present encyclopedia; search for exotic specimen in the Age of the Great Geographic Discoveries and later, during expeditions sponsored by collectors or botanic societies; flourishing of botany as a modern science; phenomenon of the so-called tulip mania; links between art collections and botanic collections (e.g. arboreta of the seats of major Polish families in 19th century), and present research and scientific facilities that are often composed of museums and seed banks, herbaria, specialized libraries. Furthermore, museums and botanic gardens have the same priorities in terms of their activity as well as similar or the same visitors.
