Business Tourism and Sustainable Tourism – An Example of a Hotel in Agglomeration

Journal Title: Zeszyty Naukowe Wyższej Szkoły Bankowej w Poznaniu - Year 2015, Vol 63, Issue 6

Abstract

The concept of sustainable development is one of the most desirable goals, in terms of development of an area, for urban or tourist regions. In tourism, the answer to the problems is the concept of sustainable tourism. Business tourism, like no other form of tourism, develops based on a hospitality product, and that is why the possibilities of the deployment of sustainable tourism principles are conditioned by the actions of hotels in the area. There is a problem however, in whether the “business product” development does not interfere with the environmental friendly and prosocial actions that are connected with the concept of sustainable development. The purpose of this article is to verify the hypothesis that the development of business tourism in agglomeration can proceed in accordance with the principles of sustainable tourism. The authors analyse dependencies between these types of tourism in the context of conceptual ranges, on the basis of the theory and environmental friendly actions of business hotels. In the empirical part of the study, the authors present the results of a case study from the analysis of one of the hotels in Poznan. The analysis showed that while in the examined object there are different actions taken regarding the reduction in the usage of resources, like energy or air, the actions in the field of protection of natural and cultural heritage and maintenance, and reinforcement of the prosperity of the local community, there are practically no specific actions taken concerning the education of employees.
