Calculation Method for Number of Battery Energy Storage Trams in Operation

Journal Title: Urban Mass Transit - Year 2024, Vol 27, Issue 2

Abstract

[Objective] To address the issues that the conventional method for calculating the number of VO (vehicles in operation) is not applicable to battery energy storage trams and the overly complex layout of train operation diagrams, a revised calculation formula for determining VO number is proposed. [Method] The conventional method for calculating VO number unaffected by charging is introduced. Based on this, taking the influence of tram charging process into account, a calculation method for determining VO number of battery energy storage trams that meets operational plan is proposed. Calculation assumptions are presented, and the calculation methods for various related parameters are described. Taking the VO number calculation of a battery energy storage tram line in a city as example, the proposed method is used to analyze the situation where the train goes off-line for charging after reaching the endurance mileage during on-line operation. [Result & Conclusion] The train operation process is divided into three stages: the concentrated on-line process before peak hours, the on-line train operation process, and the concentrated train off-line replacement and on-line supplement process. The calculated VO number has an error of approximately 5% compared to the results obtained through the layout of train operation diagram, indicating that the proposed method for calculating VO number can meet operational requirements with a certain margin.
