Can serum levels of copper and zinc distinguish Alzheimer’s patients from normal subjects?
Journal Title: Journal of Neurological Sciences-Turkish - Year 2007, Vol 24, Issue 3
Abstract
The most frequent cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Although many theories had been postulated in the pathogenesis of AD, the most accepted one is ‘oxidative stress theory’. Copper and zinc are the two essential elements that have been proposed to have roles in oxidative stress. To show the functions and possible diagnostic features of these elements in AH we compared serum levels of copper and zinc in 98 AH patients and age, sex and education matched 78 control subjects. In AH we found significantly high copper and significantly low zinc levels when compared with the control subjects. Our results suggest that high copper and low zinc serum levels can be distinctive for AH patients and can constitute a base for studies on subjects who are at preclinical stages of AH.

rAAV2-mediated Gene Expression In Primary Cortical Neural Cells Following Inhibition Of DNA Synthesis and/or EGFR Tyrosine Kinase
Aim: In an effort to enhance rAAV2 transduction efficiency in primary cortical neural cells, we examined the combined effects of chemicals known to increase rAAV2 transduction efficiency in many other cell types. Result...
Cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Idiopathic Parkinson Disease
Aim: Postural instability is one of the main characteristic of idiopathic Parkinson's disease (iPD) with unknown cause. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of vestibular system in postural instability by usi...
