Caries in deciduous and permanent teeth and oral hygiene status in children with selected hematological diseases
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 10
Abstract
Introduction: Patients with hematological diseases are at increased risk of developing complications within the oral cavity. Oral pathological changes observed in this group of children often arise due to impaired immune system.Aim of the research: To evaluate the condition of hard dental tissues and oral hygiene status in children with congenital haemorrhagic diatheses and in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).Material and methods: The clinical study involved 156 children aged 2 to 18 years with blood diseases, including 79 children with congenital haemorrhagic diatheses and 77 children with ALL. The control group consisted of 156 healthy children. The following were evaluated: caries index in all groups of subjects: dmft/DMFT and its components dt/DT, oral hygiene was assessed for all groups using OHI-S index, and plaque deposits using the dental plaque index PI.Results: The average DMFT index for children with congenital haemorrhagic diatheses was 5.83±5.22, and for children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia 4.94±4.51. This value was mainly affected by the D component. Conclusion: Carious process was significantlymoreactive in the permanent dentition of children with congenital haemorrhagic diatheses flawscomparedwith children suffering from ALL and in the control group children.
