Carnitine deficiency and effectiveness of oral carnitine supplementation in children with short bowel syndrome

Abstract

Introduction: Carnitine is necessary for the transfer of fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane for oxydation metabolism. Aim of study: The aim of the study was to analyze serum carnitine concentration in chiidren with short bowel syndrome on partial parenteral nutrition and analyze of effectiveness of oral carnitine supplementation. Material and methods: Study included 51 patients with short bowel syndrome, between 1 month to 19 years. Free and total carnitine concentration were measured in serum samples in chiidren. Oral carnitine was supplemented in doses 30 mg/kg/day during 1 month in patients with carnitine deficiency. Hepatic and lipid laboratory examinations were measured before and after supplementation. Results: 42 chiidren had carnitine deficiency (free carnitine 23 umol/l, total 34 umol/l). The concentration of serum free (32 umol/l) and total carnitine (42 umol/l) in children after oral supplementation was significantly increased p
