Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: An Analytical Study in Nepalese Context
Journal Title: Nepal Journal of Neuroscience - Year 2014, Vol 11, Issue 1
Abstract
Carpal Tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common peripheral nerve compression syndrome. It is common in Nepal as in other parts of the world. But there is hardly any analytical study of CTS in Nepalese context. So this is our simple experience on CTS and we have tried to do critical analysis on various aspects of CTS. We analyzed 78 cases of CTS operated in Norvic International Hospital over last few years. All the patients underwent nerve conduction study before surgery. X-ray of cervical spine and MRI were also done in few cases to rule out possible cervical radiculopathy. Conservative treatment was done initially for few weeks for all the cases, surgery was then done if not improved. Of 78 cases nine (11.5%) were males and rest were females. Left hand was involved in 16 cases and both hands were involved in 10 cases. Rest had right side CTS. Majority presented with pain and numbness of hand and forearm, few had pain and heaviness in proximal part upper limb ie upper arm and shoulder. There was symptomatic improvement in all the patients. Not a single patient had surgery related complications and surgical failure. In conclusion, CTS is easy to diagnose and its surgical treatment is simple. Surgical option with promising result can be given to the patients who don’t improve conservatively.
