CEILING DAMAGE DUE TO SWELLING OF SLAG AGGREGATE IN TERIVA CONCRETE FILLER BLOCKS
Journal Title: Structure and Environment - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 3
Abstract
The paper reports an example of damage to a Teriva floor slab system. The bottom section of the concrete filling block and the ceiling plasterwork broke away. No symptoms were observed to indicate excessive deformation and/or displacements in the structure of the building. Laboratory tests revealed that the damage occurred on account of internal corrosion of concrete due to periclase swelling. The mineral was a component of the slag aggregates used for the production of the floor blocks. The factor initiating the corrosion process was most probably an increase in relative humidity in the rooms covered with the floor system, resulting from a change in the intended use. The damage occurred after over 10 years’ damage-free service period. Swelling of periclase led to the failure of the concrete filler blocks in the Teriva beam-and-block floor system.
