Cement and Clay Treatment for Organic Matter Containing Leachate

Journal Title: World Applied Sciences Journal - Year 2007, Vol 2, Issue 4

Abstract

Clay amended cement was used to treat organic matter containing leachate. Various compositions of cement and clay with the total weight of 100 g were applied for treating leachate which contained BOD and COD of more than 1000 mg L-1. Following stirring 20 minutes at 100 rpm and 10 minutes at 60 rpm, clay treatment significantly reduced BOD and COD removal. The efficiency of clay in removing organic matter was circa 50 % of the cement efficiency. However, clay increased biodegradability of treated leachate up to 20 % while cement decreased leachate biodegradability at the same level. The chosen treatment system produced odorless treated leachate.
