CHANGE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING METHODS IN A COLLEGE: FROM TRADITIONAL TO INNOVATIVE

Abstract

The article reveals the teaching methods, which are used for deepening of the foreign language communication skills. The scientific problem of the article – it is possible to notice that there is a lack of variety of the teaching methods that might be used for development of the communication in foreign language. The students’ practical level of the foreign language usage is insufficient. Studying foreign language the main stress is put on the traditional and non-traditional teaching methods/innovative and non-innovative teaching methods. The traditional methods are the most popular. Computer based foreign language learning is a new attitude towards teaching of the foreign language. Computer technologies are used as an auxiliary tool for students’ presentations, communication, assessment and feedback. Different sources of the teaching material have been acquired from the Internet illustrate changes in the study process. The influence of the computer based learning on the foreign language learning is enormous. The research section reveals the teachers’ attitude towards the most useful and efficient foreign language teaching methods in Klaipeda State College. The analysis of the scientific literature and questionnaire forms has been used in order to conduct research. The research was conducted in January – February 2013 in Klaipeda State College. The respondents (the teachers of foreign language) have been selected from the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Technologies and the Faculty of Health Sciences. The sample of the research consists of 18 teachers. These respondents teach foreign language (English, Russian, German and French). Their work experience varies from a year up to 20 years and even more. The research indicated that the teachers of foreign language working in KSC apply different teaching methods. Both the traditional, non-traditional and the innovative methods influence teaching of foreign language. If the material basis of the College could be improved, the computer technologies would be applied on the study process more intensively. Following the results and findings of the research it is possible to apply innovative and interactive teaching methods on the process of foreign language teaching and the teaching process is getting more efficient and productive.
