Changes caused by Methyl Jasmonate in Cocker 347- a cultivar of tobacco (Nicotine tabacum L.) under salinity stress

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 4, Issue 5

Abstract

Chloride is an essential micronutrient in plants. High concentrations of chloride ions in the soil by altering the osmotic equilibrium and ionic balance; disrupt water absorption via the root, and induce toxic symptoms in plants. Salinity causes physiological changes in the plants. To evaluate the effect of different concentrations of Methyl Jasmonate in salinity conditions caused by of various concentrations of chlorinated water for irrigation (zero, 150 and 300 mg per liter), tobacco plant (Nicotiana tabacum L.), a factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design in three replications and different concentrations of Methyl Jasmonate (zero and 30 g per liter), as pre-treatment of seeds was done. Four weeks later, the samples were harvested. Results of analysis of variance showed that the dry weight of treated shoots was decreased by salinity and Jasmonate. But, Pretreatment with Methyl Jasmonate enhanced photosynthetic pigments and proteins in stress and non-stress conditions. Proline content increased in salinity treatments. But, interaction of salinity and Methyl Jasmonate, reduced to proline content. It seems to be greatly that Methyl Jasmonate can protect the tobacco plants against salinity resulting from chloride ions.
