Characterization of prediabetes in young adults

Abstract

Introduction: Knowing about prediabetes allows identifying and intervening in the lifestyle of these patients, avoiding their progression of cases to diabetes mellitus in a higher percentage high. Objective: To characterize prediabetes in young adults assigned to clinic 2 of Family and Community Medicine of the Guasmo Oeste Manglar health center in the year 2021. Materials and methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study. 147 were included people who corresponded to the universe of the population between 20 and 39 years of age, assigned to office 2 of the Manglar Health Center. The information was obtained through a survey, the Findrisk test and the result of a fasting blood glucose test. The program was used statistics SPSS version 22.0. Results: The population consisted of 89 women (60.5%) and 58 (39.4%) men; It was identified that the most frequent risk factor in the young adults was overweight and obesity with 67.3% and predominance in female, the majority (40.8%), had a low risk of developing diabetes mellitus in 10 years and a prevalence of prediabetes of 24.5% was found. most young adults prediabetes had several modifiable risk factors and 55.6% of them had considerable risk (moderate and high), of developing diabetes in 10 years. Conclusion: The prevalence of prediabetes approached a quarter of the population, predominating in female, most had several modifiable risk factors, especially overweight or obesity and altered waist circumference, with a considerable risk of developing diabetes mellitus in 10 years. Therefore, it is considered that detecting patients at risk of developing diabetes mellitus 2, is essential to generate preventive actions in this population
