Chemical composition of groundwater in the area of flooded sand pit Kuźnica Warężyńska in view of modelling investigations
Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2009, Vol 436, Issue 436
Abstract
The pit Kuźnica Warężyńska (Dąbrowa Górnicza) has been a place of extracting stowing sand for nearly 40 years but now it is flooded and functions of a flood control reservoir. The aim of this study was to recognize chemical composition of groundwater of the Pleistocene aquifer around the pit. The results of chemical analyses and geochemical modelling by means of Phreeqc show spatial diversity of chemical composition of groundwater, what is mainly caused by anthropogenic activity (agriculture, municipal sewage) as well as geochemical heterogeneity of the quaternary aquifer. Groundwater around the pit is characterized by pH ranging from 5.0 to 7.2 and by total dissolved solids from 150 to 1200 mg/l. Furthermore, chemical analyses indicated increased concentration of Ni, Cd ang Mn in water. Hydrodynamic changes could initiate or intensify some hydrogeochemical processes like sulfides and organic matter oxidation, calcite dissolution and gypsum precipitation during draining the aquifer, but also Mn-oxides reduction and Ni and Cd desorption after pit flooding.

INFLUENCE OF PRECIPITATION AND INFILTRATION ON RECHARGE THE PALEOGENE AQUIFERS OF THE BESKID SĄDECKI FLYSCH
The paper describes research on the effect of precipitation and infiltration on the groundwater recharge of the Palaeogene aquifer. Since the safe yield in the Tylicz region is closely linked to the recharge regime, the...
