Abstract
The article briefly reviewed the state of genetic and breeding science in Ukraine before and during the establishment of the Vavilov Society of Geneticists and Breeders of Ukraine (VSGBU) events that preceded and led to the need for a public organization in this field. The activity of the VSGBU is analysed over the 50 years period mostly on the example of material of its nine congresses. It is considered the involvement in the VSGBU activity of Ukrainian and foreign scientists as well as the role of the Society in restoring classical genetics and genetic basis of breeding in Ukraine in the 1960s and role in the development of new areas of genetics, the genetic basis of breeding, cell biology, and biotechnology at the end of the last and at the beginning of this century.Keywords: history of science, genetics, breeding, biotechnology.
