Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of presented study is to discuss the phenomenon of communist heritage tourism as a type of cultural tourism. Cultural tourism, is defined as a set of behaviors of tourists associated with their genuine interest in cultural heritage (monuments, folklore, and places associated with important events, etc.), as well as their participation in the wider contemporary cultural life. The phenomenon of communist heritage tourism is discussed as a tourism trend: the author recapitulates types of relics of communism and the importance and uses of the communist heritage as a tourist attraction in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. . Redefinition of the notion of tourist attractions and the expectation of encountering signs from a different repertoire than the one available in the catalogs of travel agencies approaches the communist heritage tourism to the category of post-tourism. Methodology: This paper is theoretical. The study provides an overview of the literature and the current state of research on the phenomenon of communist heritage tourism. Results and conclusions: The subject of presented issue involves analyzing of ambivalent relationship between communist heritage tourism and the construction of post-communist identity, paying attention to the opportunities and threats posed by this phenomenon. Communist heritage tourism is an interesting subject of discussion both because of the redefinition of the concept of a tourist attraction, and ambivalent relation to the legacy of the communist and post-communist identity
