Circular Economic Migration of Parents and the Quality of Family Socialization of Children in Poland

Abstract

Circular economic migration of parents may affect the socio-emotional and educational situation of children left in their home country. The power and direction of this effect depends on a number of factors characterizing the migrant families’ environment. This article attempts to identify intrafamilial characteristics and processes that act as mediator variables of relationships between parents’ economic migrations and children’s functioning at home, school and within their peer group. The study was conducted according to the rules of qualitative methodology. Data from 22 subjects (children, caretakers and teachers) was triangulated in 7 cases. On the basis of a priori and a posteriori analyses of the collected material, it was possible to distinguish five relatively independent characteristics of a family environment that co–occurred with more vs. less functional children’s behaviours: (1) care vs. lack of care for family relations; (2) common goals vs. parents’ egoism; (3) positive relations between children and the absent parent vs. the child experiencing a sense of rejection; (4) care for a proper vs. disturbed socialization of a child; and (5) an adequacy vs. inadequacy of educational practices applied by parents toward children.
