Classification of damages and imperfections of joints in steel structures under dynamic loading action

Abstract

The places with a high level of stresses are the main reason of fatigue cracks appearance in joints of steel structures under dynamic loading. Modern normative classification tables in general have no numeric description of parameters affecting concentration. On the basis of theoretical and experimental investigations of joints with H-beams (chord) and rectangular hollow sections – RHS (brace members) the local stress concentration factors are determined. The partial factors and their parametrical values and relationships have been established to determine the given factor’s value. The most stressed places in the zones of a welded joint are determined for different types of joints with local reinforcement and without it. It is proposed to index all damages and imperfections of classification table as “resource” and “diagnostic” with the compulsory indication of danger for structures under dynamic action. It is proved that such imperfection as eccentricity of brace-to-chord connection may seriously influence local stress concentration and stimulate early development of fatigue cracks. The parameters of this diagnostic defect have been proposed for future determination of the technical condition category of the structure according to the technical investigation results.
