Abstract

Introduction. Mandibular intercanine width represents animportant diagnostic value for a physician orthodontist, andmaintaining proper position of canines during orthodontictreatment improves the stability of achieved results andprevents from complications. Aim. The paper aimed topresent the importance of mandibular intercanine width indiagnostic procedures and orthodontic treatment planning.Materials and methods. A review of literature was madeusing PubMed database, searching for the following keywords:intercanine width, and intercanine distance. Thirtyliterature items have been selected from 265 results. Theliterature has been supplemented with three papers fromother than PubMed database sources. Review and discussion.Lower intercanine width increases to an average of thirteenyears of age, after which it slowly decreases by the time thatmaturity is reached as well as in the adulthood. Despite thefactthat, as the lower intercanine width decreases thecrowding of lower incisors frequently occurs, no directcorrelation was demonstrated to exist between those values.Patients whose orthodontic treatment was completed ata younger age, show a stronger tendency for decreasedmandibular intercanine width and tooth crowding recurrence.Opinions on expansion of the dental arch in the mixeddentition stage are divided; however, application of a passivelingual arch certainly allows to maintain the dental archlength and use the leeway space to resolve the incisorcrowding, preventing mesial movement of molar teeth.During orthodontic treatment, the distance between thelower canines is usuallyincreased, which may causea recurrence to the original status when retention iscompleted, or also parodontium tissue damage.
