Cognitive functioning changes as the effect of complex treatment of masticatory organ dysfunction

Abstract

Introduction: Among a number of tangible benefits achieved by patients as a result of comprehensive treatment of functional disorders of chewing organ comprising reduction of pain can be mentioned. This effect is associated with a series of change at the neurophysiological level, which are inseparably connected with psychological, including cognitive, changes. Aim of the study: The article aims at description of changes observed in cognitive functioning of patients with painful kind of dysfunction of chewing organ observed after three months of prosthetic treatment supplemented with psycho-educational and physiotherapeutic impact. Material and methods: 45 patients took part in research including 23 people with recognized painful form of functional disorders of chewing organ of myofascial kind as well as 22 people with recognized functional disorders of the same type who do not complain about pain symptoms. Planned statistical analysis included a number of inner-group comparisons based on data achieved with the use of chosen psychological tests and neuropsychological clinical trials. Results: Therapeutic effects were noticed both with reference to chosen spheres of cognitive functioning which initially differentiated the control and research groups as well as the ones which did not differentiate these two groups. Summary: The results achieved indicate that cognitive functioning undergoes dynamic changes in initial phase of treatment. The knowledge about them may appear to be essential for planning of further therapeutic impacts and beneficial to maintain patient's engagement in the process of treatment.<br/><br/>
