Cognitive impairment in hospitalized adolescent girls suffering from anorexia and bulimia nervosa

Journal Title: Acta Neuropsychologica - Year 2011, Vol 9, Issue 3

Abstract

The purpose of our study was to assess cognitive functions in adolescent inpatients with eating disorders, as the issue remains controversial. We used the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and the Digit Span Test to assess working memory and executive functions in 30 female inpatients with anorexia and 30 with bulimia in the psychiatric adolescent unit, and in 39 age- and gender-matched controls. The results were correlated with clinical parameters and the psychopathological profile. The adolescent anorectic and bulimic patients did not have cognitive disorders, and there was little correlation between measures of cognitive functions and clinical parameters. The results of our research do not confirm the presence of disturbances of working memory and executive functions in the group of eating disorders patients.
