Journal Title: Heterotopic View - Year 2023, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

Culture finds an important place in geography as in many other sciences. Especially in recent years, the number of studies on cultural geography has increased in Turkey, cultural geography subjects have been included more in the "Geography curriculum" and cultural geography courses have started to be taught in universities. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the views of geography teachers on culture in general and popular culture and folk culture in particular. Within the framework of this general purpose, the opinions of the research group on the place of popular culture and folk culture subjects in geography subjects and their situation in curricula and textbooks are presented. In this study, focus group interview, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used in data collection, and content analysis method was used in data analysis. Focus group interview questions consist of two parts. In the first part, there are questions about the demographic information of the teachers. The second part is devoted to open-ended questions on the subject. According to the data obtained in the study, teachers express popular culture as a temporary culture based on consumption. On the other hand, folk culture is based on production, has thousands of years of history, and accepts it as the local identities of societies. At the same time, the majority of the teachers participating in the research predict that the folk culture will lose its existence in the future and that the culture will change by developing as a living phenomenon.
