Cohort analysis of survival time of micro enterprises in Gdansk

Abstract
This paper presents the results of a longitudinal study of survival time of micro enterprises set up in Gdansk in 2009. The aim of the research was to determine a distribution of survival time of these enterprises, and to derive a pattern for firms’ existence time on the market in Gdansk. A cohort analysis approach, developed within the field of demography, was employed. Survival analysis methods, which allow to estimate distribution of survival time from the initial event (outset of business activity) to the final event (termination of business activity), were also applied. An empirical cohort life table of micro enterprises was constructed. In addition, a survival function was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier estimator. Results of the study can be used to implement an effective economic policy to support business development in Gdansk, and for comparison with results of similar research carried out in other cities or regions.
