Colorectal cancer

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 2

Abstract

Colorectal cancer is a major oncological and health problem in Poland. Analysis of epidemiological trends indicate that the incidence of colorectal cancer will increase. Currently about 13 000 new cases are diagnosed annually. Organized screening program may reduce mortality from this malignancy. Personalized therapy is an important goal for improving the outcome of patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma and includes the intention to maximize efficacy and minimize toxicity of chemotherapeutic and molecularly targeted agents. Systemic chemotherapy have improved prognosis for patients with stage III colon cancer, but the role of adjuvant treatment in stage II remains unclear. Increased survival in patients with metastatic disease can be attributed to the introduction of new cytotoxics and biologicals, better selection of patients, multidisciplinary treatment strategy and improved techniques to resect metastatic disease particularly in liver metastases. The purpose of this review is to summarize current knowledge and treatment recommendations for clinical practice for the treatment of patients with colorectal cancer.
