COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING IN ESL

Abstract

The Communicative Language Teaching approach in English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction is learner-centered and emphasizes the use of language for communication in real-life situations. An ESL syllabus using this approach is designed around the real-world tasks that a learner needs to perform in the target language, rather than around grammatical features. In CLT, the role of the instructor is different from that of traditional ESL teaching methods. In the traditional classroom, the teacher is the focus and is solely responsible for the content of the ESL course and the motivation of the learners. In CLT, the teacher serves as a facilitator, allowing learners to share responsibility, set goals, and take charge of their own language learning.
